Straight out of the box, Wordpress blogs are terrible for SEO. You have to do some modifications to them in order to get your fair share of Google’s massive reach.
I had known this all along and had done a few basic things to help with SEO but I hadn’t really tricked out my blog yet…
It wasn’t until I read this post at DestyOnline.com that I realized with all of the other stuff I had going on, I had forgotten to give my blog the best chance possible in the search engine war.
Thankfully, with Wordpress they have plugins that make your job of creating a search engine friendly blog that much easier. After digging around and doing some research, I ended up installing 10 new Wordpress plugins to help out with the SEO of my blog.
#10 - Full Text Feed
What it does…
The Full Text Feed Plugin will allow you to display your full RSS feed for your subscribers even if you are using the more tag for your blog posts.
How it helps…
Using the more tag when you make your posts can help keep the search engines from listing a page in supplemental results due to duplicate content.
Side Note…
Using the more tag can also help increase your page views and make it easier for readers to browse down your blogs page.
What it does…
This plugin will allow you to display related posts in the signature of your RSS feed.
How it helps…
It’s a fact, scrapper sites are out there and they are going to scrap your feed at some point. With this plugin added the related posts will be displayed on the scrapped site so they will actually end up helping you deeplink your blog.
Side Note…
This plugin will also help encourage your RSS subscribers to click through to your website, helping to increase your traffic and page views.
#8 - Recent Posts From Category
What it does…
This plugin will display your most recent posts from the category that is currently being read at the end of the post.
How it helps…
This plugin helps provide the search engines with more deeplinks to the content in your blog which helps for better indexing.
Side Note…
This is also a solid plugin for increasing your page views and visitor lengths since these links get clicked on all the time.
#7 - Permalink Redirect
What is does…
A WordPress plugin that replies a 301 permanent redirect, if requested URL is different from entry’s (or archive’s) permalink. It is used to ensure that there is only one URL associated with each blog entry.
How it helps…
Without this plugin Google may index your URL in 2 different ways, one with a slash at the end and one without a slash. A minor detail but this minor detail may cause you to lose some of your PageRank.
#6 - Search Meter
What it does…
This plugin tracks what your readers are searching via your blog’s search bar. It also lets you know if they found what they were looking for.
How it helps…
The data collected can help you better understand what your readers are looking for and what keywords to optimize your blog for in the future.
Side Note…
This plugin can also help show you what you should be writing about if you want to please your readers more.
#5 - www-Redirect
What it does…
This plugin allows you to redirect your visitors to your URL with or without the “www” …the choice is yours.
How it helps…
This plugin helps keep your PageRank up and your blog posts out of the dreaded supplemental results by making sure that everyone accesses the same URL.
#4 - Antisocial
What it does…
This is a hacked version of the Sociable plugin and allows users to bookmark your posts at 50 different bookmarking sites. The difference with the hacked version is that a “nofollow” tag is added to all of the bookmarking sites links. It also supports a couple more sites too.
How it helps…
If users bookmark your posts it will help increase your link popularity, thus improving your search engine rankings. Plus with the “nofollow” tag added you won’t leak any of your PageRank to the social bookmarking sites.
What it does…
This plugin will create a XML Google sitemap.
How it helps…
This will help get more of your pages indexed by Google.
#2 - No Follow From Home
What it does…
Nofollow from Home is a WordPress 2.0.5 plugin which adds rel=nofollow to all external links only in your posts, and only on your home page. It means these same links will not have this attribute when you post slips onto the 2nd page, or when displayed in Categories or Archives pages, or when the post is displayed as a single post.
How it helps…
This will keep your homepage’s PageRank high and strong.
#1 - All In One SEO Pack
