The Nature of the Mind and Affirmations

A very important yet tough question to answer is why do affirmations work. A number of people are simply comfortable that they work they do not care why or how. However there are others that look for an explanation in everything.
To consciously program your mind to function in the way you want you use affirmations. In order to do this you have to understand that your mind works in two different ways.
There are two parts to your mind, the conscious part and the subconscious part. The conscious part is what you use daily.
It is joined to the external world and keeps up with everything that is going on around you. Your conscious mind to keeps a diary of what is going on around you and seems to keep a conversation going inside your head at all time.
For example: “Okay, first I need to go get groceries, then I’ll come home and get the dishes done… Oh, I almost forgot, I need to make sure and get an anniversary card, I wonder if I will see them before then or if I should mail it. That reminds me, I need to get some stamps…”
This is your conscious mind at work and it never stops. It is the part of mind that is used to manage your bodily functions and your thoughts. You have direct control over this part of your mind.
The subconscious is the other part and it works on a much deeper level than the conscious mind. It is less under your control and is tuned to the non-physical area such as your emotions, including fear, motivation and excitement.
Your subconscious mind is not under your control, it runs on autopilot. However it responds according to how it was previously programmed; which occurs throughout your life’s events and motions that you experience.
There are times when you have a desire that seems to come from within and you do not know why; this is proof of your subconscious mind working.
You may be asking, how does this have anything to do with affirmations? Even though your conscious mind is doing the daily work, your subconscious mind is what is in control of your life.
It influences the who, what, where and how of life on a large scale. For your subconscious mind to work in your favor, you have to program it, which takes place through affirmations.
Affirmations repeated over and over on a conscious level eventually become a part of your subconscious mind. This is true of anything that is done repeatedly.
In your life, programming has taken place over time; behaviors, attitudes or events that were frequently repeated have programmed your subconscious mind.
An example of this would be that as child your mother would reward you with a treat for a job well done. While growing up, this happened over and over again and your subconscious mind associated progress with eating sweets and rewarding yourself. This is not a bad association, unless of course you are always on a diet trying to lose weight.
Your beliefs and attitudes can also be a part of programming. For example, if you were always told when you were young that rich people are sinners, then your subconscious mind is going to do what it can to keep you from getting rich; even if your conscious mind understands that being rich is not a sin, the programming of your subconscious mind will win every time.
This is when affirmations are very important. By repeating positive affirmations about the changes you want to see in your life, you will reprogram your subconscious mind.
You use your conscious mind to re-train your subconscious by repeating the positive affirmations on a frequent basis until your subconscious mind has accepted it as the truth.
Once this happens, your new beliefs will be a part of your normal behavior.
